Cops arrest 180 in Bay crime sweep

NELSON Mandela Bay police officers arrested almost 200 people for a variety of crimes over a six-day period.

While many holidaymakers partied and ate heartily, police were on high alert with their hard work paying off when they arrested 180 people over the long weekend.

Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the arrests took place between December 24 and yesterday.

“Different police stations from around the Bay had different operations going simultaneously to catch the bad guys across the city.

“All arrests made were new cases,” Janse van Rensburg said.

Seven police stations were involved in the operation.

The arrests included 14 for house robbery, 13 for drunk-driving and 14 for robbery.

Several suspects accused of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm were also arrested.

“There were also some drug-related arrests. We believe this is important as drugs can lead to other crimes because drug users need to sustain their habits and they might do so by breaking in and stealing,” Janse van Rensburg said. – Nomazima Nkosi
