Murder suspect shot in Zwide

A MURDER suspect was wounded while trying to evade arrest in Zwide, Port Elizabeth, yesterday morning.

The 24-year-old man was wanted in connection with the murder of police constable Siyabulela Mtshekisa, 32, in Kwazakhele last month.

Police spokesman Constable Mncedi Mbombo said the man was shot by tactical response team members in Koyana Street at about 10am yesterday.

“This individual was wanted for the murder of a police constable and has other outstanding cases,” he said.

“He was caught during a stop-and-search operation aimed at locating illegal weapons and stolen goods.

“When they stopped this individual walking in the road, he ran away and pulled out a firearm.

“He pointed the gun at the police officers who then shot him in the upper body.

“In addition to being wanted for murder, he also has two pending cases of murder in KwaDwesi and another pending case of illegal possession of a fire- arm.”

Mbombo said the suspect would appear in court after being discharged from hospital. – Gareth Wilson
