A FORENSIC expert from the Gelvandale mortuary has been suspended after a picture of a suspected gang leader’s body was posted on Facebook.
The picture showed the naked body of Donovan “Staal” Berry, 47, who died in a hail of bullets, on a mortuary table.
Berry was killed in Barberry Street, Bethelsdorp, last Tuesday.
The mortuary worker’s name is known to The Herald, but he could not be reached for comment yesterday.
The picture was posted on the Facebook page, “Staal and Crew ons watch julle my bru”, just nine hours after Berry died.
The Facebook page, which described Berry as Port Elizabeth’s biggest murderer, has since been closed.
Health Department spokesman Siyanda Manana said the suspension was a precautionary measure.
He said a notice to suspend the official had been issued last week.
“We are investigating misconduct against the staff member. We are not saying he is guilty of any offence.”
Manana said he could not say whether the suspended official had taken or posted the picture.
“We took this decision based on an allegation,” he said.
“Once the investigation is done, we will communicate its outcome to the public.”
Manana condemned the incident, saying it was against the government’s policy of respecting the dead.
A picture of Berry’s bloodied body lying in the street was also posted on the page shortly after his death.
