PROFESSOR Barney Pityana has officially assumed the position of president of convocation at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Pityana, who was born in Uitenhage and grew up in Port Elizabeth, said he was honoured to hold such a prestigious position.
The decision was made in December but a statement was released only yesterday.
Pityana said he was looking forward to travelling across the country as a brand ambassador for the university.
Pityana takes over from Mary Burton, who served for the past four years.
He will chair discussions relating to matters about the university.
The convocation is the highest governing structure of the institution.
UCT vice-chancellor Dr Max Price said he was confident Pityana’s term of office would benefit the university.
