Police recovered tobacco worth R500 000 and three firearms in NU-17 Mdantsane, situated between East London and King William’s Town, yesterday.
Three suspects, a male and two females, were arrested in the process.
Mdantsane Crime Prevention members acted on information gathered about the tobacco boxes being hidden in a house at NU-17 after a robbery of a tobacco van in Beacon Bay.
Police searched the premises and seized large boxes of tobacco believed to be robbed during a heist. Three fire-arms were confiscated.
Mdantsane Cluster Commander Brigadier Stanley Bennett commended the good work done by his members.
“ Criminals should know that we are prepared, willing and able to pro-actively prevent them from committing crime,” he said.
The three suspects, aged between 25 and 30, are facing charges of possession of stolen goods, possession of unlicensed fire-arms and armed robbery and are due to appear in the Mdantsane and East London Magistrate’s Court respectively, soon.
