SEVEN charitable members of the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) this week made sure that Sithembile Primary School pupils in the Bay would no longer share a seat during classes with their donation of more than 200 chairs.
The women stretched out their umbrellas, put on their coats and made their way to the school in the rainy weather on Monday morning to bring smiles to the waiting pupils.
“We want nothing more than for these pupils to be taught in comfort. The principal approached me and asked for my assistance, I just knew we had to get these chairs to the school,” UJW secretary Beryl Meyer said.
Through funds received from book sales as well as the assistance of the national lottery fund and businesses around the Bay, the women raised R20000 for the chairs.
Principal Gladwin Piet said these chairs were a necessity and the women had previously reached out to the school through a donation of chairs, a photocopier, carpets, a radio and library books. – Chanice Koopman
