KOUGA firefighters and a large number of residents rallied together to fight a massive blaze which raged through a Paradise Beach farm house and threatened to ignite neighbouring farm lands yesterday.
John Wiehahn, a member of Neighbourhood Watch, said the fire began on the Paradise Horse Farm, to the west of Jeffreys Bay, at about 11.15am when a farm labourer had attempted a controlled refuse burn close to the massive, thatched-roofed house on the property.
“The fire threatened to engulf the entire area of smallholdings.
“Four fire trucks, aided by smaller emergency vehicles descended on the site and fire fighters were stretched to the limit in a battle to contain the flames,” Wiehahn said.
“Of much greater danger, however was the gusting wind carrying burning embers, and depositing them in the adjoining fields. Many smaller fires flared up, some more than 50m from the main house.”
